The BeWell project has been highlighted in the latest issue of Eurohealth (Vol. 31, No. 3, 2025) in an article by Gemma A. Williams, Michelle Falkenbach, and Matthias Wismar from the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies.

The article “Transforming Digital Skills and Competencies in the Health and Care Workforce”  explores the urgent need to upskill and reskill Europe’s health and care professionals to meet the demands of digital transformation. As the European Health Data Space (EHDS) takes shape, the authors highlight that the success of this ambitious framework depends on a workforce equipped with the right digital knowledge, competencies, and confidence to navigate health data, apply new technologies, and use them ethically and effectively.

Drawing on insights from the BeWell Project, the article underlines the importance of a coordinated and multi-level approach to digital education in healthcare. The authors note that despite the strong policy momentum, gaps in digital readiness remain, often due to limited training infrastructure, lack of protected time for continuing education, and uneven access to digital tools across regions. They stress that digital competencies must be embedded into all levels of education and professional development, from undergraduate training to lifelong learning, with clear policy leadership and adequate funding to ensure equity and sustainability. The BeWell digital competence matrices, showcased in the article, offers a practical reference framework aligned with the European Commission’s DigComp 2.2 Framework, identifying key skills such as data literacy, cybersecurity, and digital collaboration.

Ultimately, the article reinforces BeWell’s vision: that digital transformation in health and care is not only about technology, but about empowering people. By investing in skills, supporting continuous learning, and fostering cross-sector collaboration, Europe can build a future-ready workforce capable of leading change, improving patient outcomes, and strengthening health system resilience.
